Uveitis

What is it?

Swelling or inflammation of the inside layers of the eye. The swelling could be located virtually anywhere in the eye. Severity of symptoms depends on what location is affected.

Who does it affect?

There are multiple causes for Uveitis. Systemic conditions in other parts of the body, eye disorders and infections can lead to swelling in the eye. In systemic conditions, blood problems or arthritis-like syndromes are often related. In many cases, a cause is not found despite a thorough workup and testing.

How is it treated?

The treatment depends on whether the swelling occurs, severity and underlying cause. In some cases, no treatment is necessary. Many cases require oral or injectable medicine or eyedrops. Corticosteroids are the primary treatment method due to their ability to suppress inflammation. Uveitis can take a long time to heal, so it is important to keep up on follow up visits with your eye care professional even when symptoms improve.
